About the Foundation
The Hemingway Foundation was founded in 1987 by Richard K. and Shirley Stranquist
Hemingway to fund charitable projects in their areas of interest in Utah and Idaho.
During Richard and Shirley’s lives, their major interests were the arts, education,
cultural activities, and the betterment of our communities.
These interests are reflected in the following criteria currently used by the
Foundation when awarding grants:
- The development of the arts.
- Educational and developmental programs fostering positive values and behaviors relating to children, youth’s and family’s issues.
- The preservation, protection and enhancement of the environment.
- Educational and developmental programs fostering the implementation of healthier lifestyles.
The foundation also requires that:
- Only one application per year will be considered.
- The program or project must be within Utah or Idaho.
- The contact person, title and telephone number be listed.
- The application must be for a specific, well-defined program or project that meets the above criteria, explained in a cover letter.
- The cover letter should contain a brief background of the organization.
- The amount requested must be specified.
- The Hemingway Foundation does not fund general operating expenses or building funds.
- The Hemingway Foundation does not fund religious organizations, nor any program or project that is solely for the benefit of an individual.
- The applicant must be a public charity and have a 501(c)(3) designation by the U.S. Treasury Department.
- The U.S. Treasury exemption letter must be in the name of the applicant.
- You must furnish a copy of the management letter, management’s response and your strategic plan.
- The Hemingway Foundation will not disburse granted funds for forthcoming projects until the project commencement unless prearranged.
If your program or project meets the above qualifications, please submit your
proposal as outlined in the accompanying application and agreement. Applications
that do not meet the above qualifications or are incomplete will be rejected. If
your U.S. Treasury letter is not attached to the application, the application will
be rejected.
Since our advisory committee receives funding requests far in excess of the
Foundation’s annual budget, we must often decline support to worthwhile organizations
and programs. Such a response does not reflect on the value of the organization
involved or on its service, but rather results from the limitation of the
Foundation’s resources.

The advisory committee meets semi-annually. In order for your proposal to be considered,
a properly completed application and agreement form and all supporting materials must be
submitted in duplicate before the submission deadline by mail. Two copies of all
supporting documents must be received in our office no later than January 1st or
August 1st of each year. Do not hold your application until the submission deadline.
It is to your advantage to submit your application as soon as possible.
